Tasmanian sprintcar sensation Jamie Bricknell has bounced back from a demoralising crash last week to steal the show from visiting US driver Craig Dollansky.
In a two night show, at both Latrobe and Hobart, Bricknell was dominant out of the box on night one before an incident saw him delegated to the rear with two laps of the final remaining. After leading 29 of the 30 laps, dicing with Dollansky and Dobson in one of the best races in recent history, Bricknell looked certain to take the chequered flag before he and Dollansky touched wheels. Dollansky suffered steering damage and was unable to restart, while Jamie was deemed at fault and sent to the rear, much to the disgust of the vocal crowd. With a mere two laps to travel, Bricknell held on for fifth place.
Bricknell was mobbed in the pits by supporters and fans, all with words of encouragement about the decision, inspiring him to repeat his driving display on the second night.
After dominating his heats on night two, Jamie started alongside Dollansky on the front row. On a hard, slick surface, Bricknell again gave the crowd a display in driving skills, holding out the American for the full 30 laps to take the flag.
"The track was tough" reflects Jamie. "Turns one and two had no traction, while three and four had a bit of drive, so picking the right line was paramount. I was backing off a bit in the corners to stop the car wheel spinning, but when I saw Craigs (Dollansky) wing coming up the inside on the last lap, I held nothing back and drove it home."
"Jamie led 59 of the 60 laps over the two finals" adds team owner Steve. "We'll carry this momentum into the next few weeks, which is where we'll need it."
The team is now packing up in preparation to head to the mainland to contest some of the biggest races in the nation, including the Kings Challenge, Classic, and Australian Title.
