The
impressive 2008/09 season form of Tasmanian Jamie Bricknell
continued at Carrick Speedway on Boxing Night (December
26) when he nearly walked away with his maiden Sprintcar
feature race victory.
Unfortunately
for the talented Launceston based 19-year-old fate had
other ideas as he ended up finishing in second place.
Bricknell had bolted to a commanding lead from the outset
that he held for the majority of the 30-lap feature
race only to have the engine aboard his # 55 TAS Giraffe
Civil Contracting supported Maxim drop down to only
seven cylinders, due to a spark plug malfunction, with
five laps remaining and ultimately hand the win to current
Tasmanian Champion Jason Dawkins.
“We
basically had the win in the bag but lady luck denied
us of a historic win,” Bricknell remarked. “The car
all night felt like it was on rails as the setup was
perfect from the opening heat race right through to
the feature race. A restart with a few laps to go in
the feature race enabled Jason [Dawkins] to get underneath
when my engine dropped down to seven cylinders and I
was thankfully able to hold onto second place. Naturally
it is disappointing to miss out on a feature race win
but it was just a bit of bad luck that prevented it
and something that was out of my control.”
Bricknell
was scheduled to start the feature race from position
three but due to pole sitter Kurt Luttrell not starting
because of engine problems this allowed him to inherit
pole position for the start. In Bricknell’s earlier
heat races he finished in second and third place.
Last
night (December 27) at Latrobe International Speedway
Bricknell finished the feature race in fifth place and
was without a doubt one of the quickest cars in the
field over the night. Bricknell started the feature
race from position six after he managed to finish his
two heat races in third and fourth place.
In the
feature race Bricknell made a slight mistake early on
in the feature race and saw him lose a few spots off
the start but he was able to quickly make them up. The
feature race went nearly flag to flag and that saw Bricknell
struggle to make ground on the pace setters. Fifth place
was where Bricknell finished at the fall of the chequered
flag despite being one of the quickest cars in the race
and the assistance of a late caution period.
The
weekend of January 9 and 10 at Carrick Speedway is when
Bricknell is next set to hit the track.
