Bricknell Primed for Mainland Adventure                                                                 19-1-2009

In what was his last appearance in Tasmania before heading over to the mainland; Jamie Bricknell ended up with his third Sprintcar feature race podium finish of the 2008/09 season by finishing second behind winner Adrian Redpath last Saturday night at Latrobe International Speedway in Tasmania.

Despite having to battle with a bent Jacobs ladder, which was sustained to his # 55 Giraffe Civil Contracting supported Maxim during the early stages of the feature race, Bricknell fought on and managed to come from being as low as fourth, after starting from inside the second row, to pass firstly Tim Hutchins for third and then Kurt Luttrell to finish in second place on the podium in what was a fantastic drive.

Earlier in the night Bricknell had finished with a victory and a fourth place from his two heat races and went into the 30 lap feature race as the third highest point scorer and therefore he started from that position.

Bricknell was happy to finish on the podium in second and showed he continued improvement and maturity as he nursed his car around for the majority of the feature race after the problems regarding the near end.

“Second place is another great result and I can’t complain too much finishing behind a driver of Adrian’s [Redpath] calibre,” said the 19-year-old. “Early on the in the feature race I was running alongside another car only for him to get loose and slide up track and that forced me to brush the wall in order to avoid contact with the other car. To be honest I didn’t think that I sustained any damage but as the feature race went on I knew there was something with the rear end of the car and to actually progress forward and finish on the podium with that dramas make the podium result even more satisfying.”

The focus now for Bricknell and his team this week is the mainland as the teenager prepares for his first trip over to compete on the mainland. Bricknell is set to contest this Wednesday night’s (January 21) President’s Cup at Avalon Raceway (Geelong, Victoria) followed by the Kings Challenge at Borderline Speedway (Mt. Gambier, South Australia) on Friday night (January 23) and then Saturday and Sunday night (January 24 and 25) for the running of Grand Annual Classic at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway in Victoria.

Bricknell’s goals heading over to mainland are simple and that is to simply learn.

“I have set no other goals than to learn as much as I can and anything after that will be a bonus,” he enthused. “The next week is going to be a very tough task as I am going to be running up against some of the best driver’s not only in Australia but in American too. I have been having a good run back home in Tasmania but when I come over to the mainland it’s going to be a completely different ball game. Although there are some nerves, I am also very excited about the tasks that lie ahead and I know the team are just as enthusiastic as I am.”
