Bricknell’s Impressive Tasmanian Championship Fight Back                                     17-2-2009

Although it wasn’t the end result that he was after; Jamie Bricknell put in a hard charging drive to recover from an early feature race spin to finish last Saturday night’s Tasmanian Sprintcar Championship at Hobart International Speedway in fifth place.

Bricknell drove strongly throughout his qualifying heat races and started the Tasmanian Championship deciding feature race from inside the second row. At the drop of the green flag he charged his way quickly into second place behind leader and eventual winner Adrian Redpath. Within half a dozen laps the 19-year-old from Launceston in Tasmania started to challenge Redpath and whilst making a charge for the lead he hit a slick patch on the low line of the track and consequently was sent into a spin.

Despite not causing a stoppage Bricknell dropped to the back of the field and it was there where he well and truly made his mark in what was an exciting hard charging recovery. Bricknell picked cars off one by one and at the finish greeted the chequered flag in a gallant fifth spot.

“We were strong all night and it was just very disappointing to make an error early on in the feature race that cost us a better result. I just hit a slick spot on the track and that was all that it took to spin me around,” Bricknell said. “Although I was annoyed with spinning out I didn’t let it affect my driving. I just put my head down and tried as hard as I could to make up as many positions as possible. I wasn’t too far off finishing on the podium at the finish we just simply ran out of laps.”

There was no question about it; Bricknell posed the only threat to Redpath and had it not been for the spin early on in the feature race the end result quite possibly could have been a different story. “Our pace during the feature race was unquestionable as were the only one passing cars and had I not spun out the end result might have been a different story,” pondered Bricknell.

The # 55 TAS Giraffe Civil Contracting backed Maxim driver and his team now turn their focus to this Saturday night’s (February 21) latest round of the Farmers Union Series at Carrick Speedway where Bricknell is currently fourth in the series point standings.
