In what
was only his seventh ever race meeting in a Sprintcar
and only his second appearance at the Mountain Dew Ice
International Speedway (Latrobe TAS) track, youngster
Jamie Bricknell put in a stunning performance, well
beyond his years, to record a sensational sixth place
finish, which also saw him the third Tasmanian based
car home, on Saturday night during the eighth round
of the World Series Sprintcar (WSS) Championship.
After
starting the feature race from position 12 due to his
sixth place finish in the B Dash, Bricknell managed
to charge his way forward, and in the process managed
a pass on former Australian Champion and last WSS round
winner Robbie Farr, to record a sixth place finish.
Bricknell’s feature race birth was on the back of a
strong qualifying time, sixth quickest out of the 28
car field, and a pair of seventh place finishers in
his two heat races.
“I couldn’t
be happier with how the night panned out, as I just
managed to pass cars, and the car was great to drive
and allowed me to achieve such a strong result,” expressed
a very pleased Bricknell.
“Although
I’m very happy, I’m a bit shocked because if someone
had said to me that I would be finishing sixth in the
feature race at the beginning of the night I would have
said they were kidding themselves.
“The
whole aim heading into the night was just to make and
finish the feature race, and anything after that was
going to be a bonus.”
Saying
that Bricknell has gained a large boost in confidence
from the weekends result would be a large understatement.
“I have
gained a lot of confidence from this result, and it
would be crazy if I didn’t, as I was racing up there
with some of the best drivers in Australia,” the 18-year-old
remarked.
“Racing
with some of the best drivers in Australia gives you
a lot more trust when racing alongside those sorts of
drivers, and they give you racing room to a certain
degree.”
Also
on the night Bricknell was awarded the WSS Hoosier Hard
Charger Award after he managed to pass a total of six
cars on his way to a sixth place finish.
The
weekend before, at the Hobart International Speedway,
for the seventh round of the WSS Championship Bricknell
didn’t have the best of runs after he crashed into the
wall during his second heat race of the night due to
getting tangled up with another car. After qualifying
22nd, Bricknell led the majority of the opening heat
race only to slip back to third in the closing stages
behind Robbie Farr and Brooke Tatnell, but ahead of
Max Dumesny. Due to failing to finish the second heat,
Bricknell started in the B-main and missed out on top
six transfer spot into the feature race after he finished
eighth.
Bricknell
will next be in action on Boxing Night (December 26)
at his home track of Carrick Speedway.
