Current
Farmers Union Sprintcar Series leader Jamie Bricknell
was able to put in a performance that was good enough
for him to be the top of the local runners during the
opening TAS VS USA Sprintcar Challenge last Saturday
night at Hobart’s Mountain Dew Ice Raceway.
The
TAS # 55 Montile Tile Boutique supported Maxim driver
was the most consistent of the local contenders, which
also included Shaun Dobson, Kurt Luttrell and Jason
Dawkins, that took on the might of the USA’s Craig Dollansky,
Paul McMahan and Lucas Wolfe.
A total
of six five lap match races made up the TAS VS USA Challenge
and the highlight for Bricknell was when he outran USA’s
Craig Dollansky during one of the match races. During
that match race Dollansky, who started alongside Bricknell
in the second row, got the jump on Bricknell, but the
Launceston based talent didn’t give up and used his
track knowledge and skill to drive around the outside
of the World of Outlaws star and pull away on his way
to a second place finish.

“It’s
great to have the opportunity to be part of the TAS
VS USA Challenge and run up against the professional
racers on home soil,” the 20-year-old said. “These USA
drivers compete in 100 race meetings a year and when
you’re able to mix it with them and actually beat them
on the odd occasion is quite a thrill.”
Apart
from the TAS VS USA Challenge duties, Bricknell concluded
the night by contesting the feature race and he ended
up finishing with an eighth place finish at the completion
of the 30-lap event. This was by far his worst result
of the season. Earlier in the feature race Bricknell
was on track for a top five result only to hook a rut
in turn four and nearly crash. As a consequence Bricknell
dropped back to dead last after he was able to stay
on all four wheels and he fought his way back to finish
in eighth spot.
The
second and final TAS VS USA Challenge is going to be
held this Saturday night (January 16) at Latrobe’s Bendigo
Bank Arena.
