There
was only a mere two points in it in the end, but Jamie
Bricknell ended up finishing second in the final point
standings of the Farmers Union Sprintcar Series.
After
leading the Farmers Union Series for the majority of
the season, Bricknell’s second place finish in the feature
race behind winner Shaun Dobson during last Friday night’s
10th and final round at Latrobe’s Bendigo Bank Arena
wasn’t enough for him to clinch the crown.
Heading
into the feature race the driver, either Bricknell or
Dobson, that finished in front would win the Farmers
Union Series and ironically it was both Bricknell and
Dobson that shared the front row. As it worked out,
Bricknell got the jump initially but race officials
ordered a restart and on the restart Dobson gained the
lead. Despite losing the start Bricknell stayed within
sight of Dobson and each time that the pair hit lap
traffic the caution light would come out and that gave
clear track to Dobson and in the lead cost Bricknell
any chance of challenging for the win.
As it
played out, Bricknell, steering the TAS # 55 Montile
Tile Boutique supported Maxim, ended up finishing the
feature race in second place and it in the end gave
Dobson a two points win over Bricknell in the final
Farmers Union Series point standings.

“It’s
disappointing to have led the series for the most of
the season and then lose it at the final round,” expressed
the 20-year-old from Launceston in Tasmania, whose dad,
Steve, won the 2006/07 season version of the Farmers
Union Series. “The final round was certainly an exciting
one, as whoever came out on top in the feature race
between Shaun [Dobson] and I would win the series. I
would have liked to have had more lapped traffic to
work with during the feature race, as I felt I was faster
in lapped traffic, but as it played out each time we
hit lapped traffic the yellow light came out and that
allowed Shaun to have a clear track which didn’t help
me.”
Bricknell,
who had finished fourth in last season’s Farmers Union
Series point standings, said that his disappointing
result during the ninth and penultimate round at Carrick
Speedway was in the end what cost him victory.
“When
I look back the round that cost me was the penultimate
one, as it had double points on offer and I failed to
finish the feature race and Shaun [Dobson] did so that
brought him right up there into contention,” Bricknell
explained. “Congratulations must go to Shaun and the
entire Dobson Motorsport team on their Farmers Union
Series win and we’ll be back next season to see if we
can go one better.”
In what
will be his final appearance of the 09/10 season, Bricknell
is set to contest this Saturday night’s (April 10) race
meeting at Carrick Speedway.
