To
say that Jamie Bricknell’s debut season in Sprintcars
was a promising one would be quite an understatement,
and on Saturday night at his home track of Carrick Speedway
in Tasmania he had his final hit of the 2007/08 season
and he ended up just off the podium with a fourth place
finish in the feature race.
Stepping
into Sprintcars from a tar Go Karting background it
didn’t take long for the 18-year-old to adjust to the
800 plus horsepower machines and he certainly achieved
a number of impressive results during the season.
Highlights
to come out of his debut season for Bricknell included
a sixth place finish, and also the hard charger award
on the night after he had started form position 12 in
the field, at Mountain Dew Ice International Raceway
during their round of the World Series Sprintcar Championship
and of course capturing his maiden podium finish just
a number of weekends ago and that historic occasion
took place at Hobart International Speedway.
Not
only was Bricknell one of the most impressive rookie’s
this season in his home state of Tasmania, but also
on the National scene too, and he would have to be one
of the leading contenders for this year’s Knoxville
Nationals Hall of Fame Rookie of the Year award.
Throughout
his home state Bricknell managed to record numerous
Top 5 feature race finishers driving his # 55 TAS Precision
Autos supported Maxim, along with a bucket load of heat
race victories, and those performances only strengthened
his claim as one of upcoming drivers on the Sprintcar
scene.
Despite
the outstanding list of results, Bricknell concedes
that the speed and the art of passing took a bit to
get used to, but as he showed, it got easier for him
as the season progressed.
“Although
the thrill of the speed took a bit to get used to, and
so did the passing of cars, as with passing you have
to be committed because if you hesitate you are going
to end up on your roof,” explained Bricknell.
“With
the more seat I got over the season the more comfortable
I became, and I feel that as the season went on my results
not only improved, but so did my consistency, and consistency
is very important when you are learning the ropes.”
Young
Bricknell paid tribute to his father Steve, along with
crew chief Kenny Cashion and crew member Neville Young,
for all their efforts throughout the season.
“Having
the support of dad and the rest of the team during the
season certainly helped with the learning process and
having them work on car setup was great too, as they
have been through it all before only a few seasons back
when dad started Sprintcars,” said Bricknell.
“It’s
also great to have the full support of my family and
friends, and it definitely makes the good results sweeter
when you have your whole family and friends around you
to share those good times.”
